Places to Visit in Finike

 Finike

Finike is a district of Antalya province known for its rich historical heritage and natural beauties.

Founded by the Phoenicians in the 5th century BC, Finike served as an important port where Limyra, the capital of Lycia, exported its agricultural products for a long time.

Phoenicia, one of the trade centers of the Phoenicians, took its name from the Greek word ‘’PHOINIKOS’’, which means "red-colored horse".

The port, which was located in the Iskele District in ancient times, is located where Acıcay flows into the sea.

Among the ruins of Finike, there are remains of fortifications from the Hellenistic period and traces of the Roman and Byzantine periods.

Located on the Teke Peninsula, Finike has been inhabited since 3.000 years BC.

Lycians are known as a community that migrated from Crete, and archaeological excavations around Finike shed light on the ancient past of the region.

When Alexander the Great captured the region in 330 BC, Lycia came under the influence of the Roman Empire.

There are various phases in the history of Phoenicia, such as Byzantine rule, Arab attacks, the Ottoman period and the short-lived Italian occupation.

Finike, which gained the status of a district in 1914, became a municipality in 1923.

Today, Finike stands out as a modern district with 26 neighborhoods and a population of 49,307.

The district is known not only for its historical past but also for its natural beauties.

  • Limyra Ancient City

The Ancient city of Limyra, located on the borders  of Antalya, Finike District, Turuncova and Sahilkent Towns, covers the acropolis on the southern slopes of Tocak Mountain, where early buildings are generally located, and the area within  the walls of the Roman and Byzantine Ages, just south of it.

Limyra's name is mentioned as ‘’Zemuri’’ in Lycian inscriptions.

This is proof that the city has been inhabited since at least the 5th century BC.

The most active period of the city was the time of the Lycian King Pericle in the first half of the 4th century BC, during which Limyra was the capital of Lycia.

As a result of the researches, from historical records; It is understood that Persian domination was in question during the years when Pericle was trying to establish the Lycian League and expand his area of sovereignty, but this domination remained only in words and Limyra, like other cities, remained in great freedom.

Limyra, which relived its brilliant period after the Pericle Period in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, was rebuilt, although it was damaged by earthquakes from time to time.

The city, which was the episcopal center during the Byzantine rule, was built in the 8th and 9th centuries. It was abandoned after the Arab raids in the centuries.

The ancient city of Limyra has been excavated by Austrian archaeologists since 1970.

Finds from different periods have both illuminated the history of the region and brought very important finds to the Antalya Museum.

Located in the northernmost part of the ancient city, the acropolis consists of an inner castle and a lower castle in the north.

In the lower castle, there are the city wall, cisterns, the Byzantine Church and the Perikle Heroon.

The mausoleum of King Pericle, dated to the 4th century BC, is of particular importance as its architecture is similar to the Nereids Monument in Xanthos and its important parts are exhibited in the Antalya Museum.

Where the acropolis reaches the plain, right next to the Turuncova and Kumluca highway, there is a theater building, originally from the Hellenistic period, which has undergone major repairs.

South of the highway; It is divided into two separate islands divided into east and west by the Limyros stream.

The area within the Early Byzantine Period wall to the west of Limyros contains older remains than the eastern one.

A structure called ‘’Ptolemaion’’ was unearthed in the southern wall of the city wall.

This monument, which was built in the Hellenistic Period, and the plastic artifacts exhibited in the Antalya Museum are important finds of the Limyra excavations in recent years.

Another important building in this area is the monumental tomb of Gaius Caesar, the adopted son of Emperor Augustus, built in AD 4.

This monument was built on the occasion of the death of Gaius Caesar in Limyra on his way back to Rome from Jerusalem.

The funeral or urn containing the ashes was taken to Rome and a monumental tomb was built in his memory.

In addition to its monumental architecture, it is famous for the marble reliefs surrounding it, of which the high relief exhibited in the Antalya Museum is perfect in terms of staging the realism of the Augustan Period.

Limyra is one of the cities with  the most rock tombs in the Lycian Region.

There are more than four hundred rock tombs in the ancient city and most of the tombs are known by name with their inscriptions written in the Lycian language.

In 1955, an American underwater team made a discovery in the cave by descending to 122 meters, but lost his life in the process.

After this incident, a ban on entering the cave and diving was imposed.

In the researches carried out by American divers, it was determined that Suluin Cave is the largest underwater cave in the Asian Continent.

Suluin Cave, located on the Antalya plateau, is located on a travertine plateau.

The cave, which is formed by water and limestones originating from the plateau, is located at a point where fresh water sources mix with the sea.

Together with the Late Chalcolithic-Early Bronze Age axes found in Arykanda, Limyra and Patara, it shows that the region was intensively inhabited.

Arykanda is located on a south-sloping terrain starting from the bottom of  a steep rock face.
